EPEE-BLADED RAPIER

Although historically inaccurate, epee fencing blades have commonly been used on stage rapiers since the 19th century. Their use was notably prevalent in Hollywood's early swashbuckling days before there were Fight Directors and sword fights were choreographed by fencing masters. There are also many more valid reasons for their continued use today as detailed below. It should be noted, however, that these blades were, and are still, specifically made for competetive fencing and, although perfectly suitable for staged rapier or smallsword play, it should be kept in mind that they are not indestructable.

As mentioned before, these blades are historically inaccurate for rapiers. So why use them? For one thing they are much less expensive than the more "realistic" looking Schlager blades (see Schlager-bladed Rapier section). Another very valid reason to choose an epee style blade is that they are lighter and much easier for the inexperienced (or experienced for that matter!) swordsperson to wield. The light, triangular, fullered blades allow for a delicate and quick style of swordplay that definitely gives more "swash" and "buckle" for the buck!
